Agay
Located in a picturesque bay and surrounded
by the Esterel Mountains, Agay is a small and attractive village that is the
home of a surprisingly wide variety of holiday rental options.
Staying in the village is a great idea for those seeking to mix the attractions
and excitement of busier French Riviera resorts such as Cannes and Antibes
with a more laid-back pace of life and some stunning natural scenery.
The bay of Agay, situated between Cap Dramont and the Baumette point, and
providing one of the most beautiful anchorages on the coast, forms the natural
gateway to the Estérel hills and is renowned for its beaches and its safe
anchorages. It has 3 fine sandy beaches and an area converted into a terrace
with access to the sea across the rocks. Being very sheltered, it has been
favoured by sailors throughout history (in Greek, Agay means favourable).
The arrival of the railway line in 1860 gave it a boost and it was soon discovered
and appreciated by many artists ; the painter Louis Valtat, composer Vincent
dIndy and writers Guy de Maupassant, Maurice Donnay and Saint-Exupéry all
stayed there. Visit the Fontaine pour le Petit Prince, erected in homage to
Saint-Exupry. Albert Cohen sited parts of the action in Belle du Seigneur
there.
The centre of Agay has a more than reasonable number of restaurants, cafes
and bars to keep those that like their nights out happy, as well as almost
a dozen small shops for those that prefer to self-cater. Wednesday is market
day in Agay, and a great place to pick up more food supplies and those all-important
souvenirs, and during summer months there is also a regular antique market.
Ecoplage of Agay:
A pilot scheme in the Mediterranean designed
to fight against errosin thank to an innovative procedure that consists of
lowering the level of the water table and therefore helping the process of
infiltration of the water brought in by the waves.
