l'Ile d'Or
L’Ile d’Or is one of the 60 most beautiful sites in France.
Inaccessible since it was privatised in 1897, it used to be the arena for sumptuous
receptions when the owner at the time declared he was king of the island. Its
square, crenellated watchtower was built with red rock from the Esterel. The
island was immortalised by Herg, the creator of Tintin in Lile Noire.
At the foot of the majestic Dramont hill range that is extended by the shape
that is now so recognisable, the island remained anonymous for a long time,
identical to all the other little rocky islands, without relief or vegetation,
sprinkled all along the Var coastline…., It was from 1897 that it was to have
a real epic…
In fact, auctioned by the State, a certain Monsieur Sergent (an established
architect in Le Dramont) became its owner for the modest sum of 280 francs.
Even at that time, this sum was not astronomical: a kerosene Peugeot was then
worth 7800 francs.
